Helena Roerich and the Agni Yoga Teachings

Philosopher, writer and translator, Helena Roerich (1879–1955) recorded the Agni Yoga series, the Teaching of Living Ethics that inspires the Agni Institute's work.

Early life

Helena Ivanovna Roerich (née Shaposhnikova; in Russian, Elena Rerikh) was born in 1879 in St. Petersburg, Russia. She received a broad education, showing particular gifts in music and a deep interest in philosophy and religious thought. In 1901 she married the painter, archaeologist and writer Nicholas Roerich. They had two sons: George (Yuri), who became a distinguished Tibetologist and orientalist, and Svetoslav, who became a painter.

Travels and the Central Asian expedition

After leaving Russia, the Roerich family lived in Europe and then, from 1920, in the United States, where Nicholas Roerich's art and cultural work drew wide attention. In the mid-1920s the family undertook a long expedition through Central Asia, crossing regions of India, Tibet, Mongolia and western China. Helena took part throughout, one of the few women to travel such routes at the time. In 1928 the family settled in the Kullu Valley in the Indian Himalayas, where they founded the Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute to study the region's natural history, medicine, languages and culture.

The Agni Yoga series

Agni Yoga is the name given to a collection of writings recorded by Helena Roerich. These were essentially dictated to her between 1924 and 1938 by Eastern teachers. The series covers philosophy, ethics, spirituality and the evolution of human consciousness, and is sometimes called the Teaching of Living Ethics. It forms a synthesis of tenets, understanding and disciplines from Buddhist and Hindu traditions, with an emphasis on the transformation of consciousness, given with the intention of informing and mentoring humanity in a new era.

The name draws on Agni, the god of fire found in the Rig Veda, who represents physical, vital and spiritual fire within living beings. In this context Agni Yoga is intended to bring about an awakening and mastery of the fires of illumination of consciousness. The books in the series include Leaves of Morya's Garden (I and II), New Era Community, Agni Yoga, Infinity (I and II), Hierarchy, Heart, Fiery World (I–III), Aum, Brotherhood and Supermundane. You can download them free on our Books of Agni Yoga page.

Other writings and translations

Helena Roerich was also a prolific correspondent and translator. Her translation of Helena Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine into Russian made that work available to a new readership. She wrote Foundations of Buddhism, published under the pseudonym Natalie Rokotova, and On Eastern Crossroads, published under the name Josephine Saint-Hilaire. Selections from her extensive correspondence were later published as the Letters of Helena Roerich, in which she answers questions from students about the practical application of the Teaching in daily life.

Later years and legacy

Nicholas Roerich died in the Kullu Valley in 1947. Helena later moved to Kalimpong in the eastern Himalayas, where she continued her writing and correspondence until her death in 1955. Her work, and that of the Roerich family, is preserved and studied by museums, societies and readers around the world, and the Agni Yoga books continue to be read in many languages.

Her central message is practical: that spiritual growth must be expressed in daily life, through labor, beauty, cooperation and the refinement of thought and heart. That emphasis on lived ethics, joined to an open spirit of inquiry, is what draws many readers to the Teaching today.
